Turkey’s Crucial Role in European Security Amidst Russian Aggression

Turkey is emphasizing its importance in European security as NATO’s second-largest army and a key geographical player amid increasing challenges posed by Russia. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan highlighted that European security cannot be firmly established without Turkey’s involvement. The Turkish defence industry is thriving, and Turkey aims to enhance its role in mediating between Ukraine and Russia while navigating its unique position in regional politics.

Turkey seeks to enhance its role in European security due to changing dynamics and the growing challenges posed by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. As NATO’s second-largest army and possessing a strategic Black Sea coastline, Turkey insists that European defence cannot be robust without its participation. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan emphasized, “It is inconceivable to establish European security without Turkey,” highlighting Ankara’s growing influence in the regional security framework.

The Turkish Defence Ministry further noted that the reshaped security landscape makes Turkey’s involvement paramount. Additionally, Turkey has expressed willingness to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine if necessary, having consistently supported the country’s sovereignty since Russia’s invasion. However, Turkey maintains a balanced relationship with Russia, remaining the only NATO member yet to impose sanctions against Moscow.

Turkey’s emergence as a vital player in defence is reflected in its thriving defence industry, which experienced a 29 percent increase in exports to reach $7.1 billion in 2024. This success is largely driven by products like the Bayraktar TB2 drones, which have gained significant popularity in various countries, further solidifying Turkey’s status in the European security architecture. Tom Waldyn of the International Institute for Strategic Studies noted, “Sales to European countries, particularly EU members, add credibility to Turkey’s argument it is an important player in European security.”

Strategically positioned on the eastern frontier of NATO, Turkey boasts a formidable military comprising 373,200 active troops and 378,700 reservists. These forces have been engaged in extensive operations against Kurdish insurgents, showcasing Turkey’s military capability and readiness. Despite the potential for stronger EU cooperation, historical disputes, particularly concerning Cyprus, have impeded progress.

Turkey’s balanced approach in dealing with Ukraine and Russia, coupled with its defence industry expansion, positions it uniquely to act as a mediator in the region. Analysts believe this could allow Turkey to reshape the power dynamics in Europe, as the EU aims to assume greater security responsibilities amid shifting US foreign policy. Nebahat Tanriverdi Yasar noted that Turkey is likely to pursue a pragmatic agenda, enhancing its mediation efforts while deepening defence ties with selective European countries.

Turkey is asserting itself as an essential contributor to European security amidst evolving geopolitical challenges, particularly following events in Ukraine. Its military strength, strategic location, and growing defence capabilities underscore its importance in the NATO alliance. By balancing relations with both Kyiv and Moscow, Turkey aims to play a mediating role and reshape the regional security landscape, though historical disputes may complicate its collaboration with the EU.
