Sudan Files Case Against UAE at World Court Over Alleged Arms Support

Sudan has initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The case revolves around allegations that the UAE has provided arms to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and violated obligations under the Genocide Convention concerning attacks in West Darfur state.

A UAE official has indicated that the country aims to seek an immediate dismissal of the lawsuit, asserting that it is devoid of any legal or factual merit. The Sudanese foreign ministry is yet to provide a comment; however, Sudanese officials have consistently accused the UAE of aiding the RSF, which are opposing forces in an ongoing civil conflict. West Darfur, particularly its capital Geneina, has witnessed severe ethnic violence perpetrated by the RSF and affiliated Arab militias against the Masalit population throughout 2023, as reported by Reuters. The World Court noted that Sudan claims that all these acts were “perpetrated and enabled by the direct support given to the rebel RSF militia and related militia groups by the United Arab Emirates.”

In response to the legal action, the UAE emphasized that this lawsuit appears to be a cynical attempt to distract from the documented complicity of the Sudanese Armed Forces in ongoing atrocities across Sudan. The official has characterized Sudan’s application to the ICJ as lacking substantive basis and primarily a publicity maneuver.
