Safaricom Completes First Phase of Data Centre Development in Limuru

Safaricom has completed the first phase of its state-of-the-art data centre in Limuru, Kenya, with plans for further expansion. The facility will deliver 2.8MW of IT capacity by January 2026 and will adhere to Tier III standards. It utilizes sustainable energy sources and includes an innovation lab.

Safaricom, the notable Kenyan mobile operator, has successfully completed the first phase of its state-of-the-art data centre in Limuru, located in Redhill, Kenya. The initial phase encompasses the completion of the first building within a planned campus that will ultimately consist of three structures.

In the forthcoming phase, which is expected to finalize by January 2026, Safaricom aims to deliver 2.8MW of IT capacity. Although the final capacity upon completion of the entire construction is yet to be disclosed, the facility is being designed to meet Tier III standards, ensuring high levels of reliability and performance.

The data centre is noted for its innovative use of free cooling and its commitment to sustainability, as it will incorporate supplementary power sourced from solar energy. Additionally, the centre will feature an innovation lab dedicated to testing new ideas, although specifics regarding this lab remain undisclosed.

Esther Karuga, the senior manager and lead of the Limuru facility at Safaricom, emphasized the project’s world-class status, stating that it adheres to best practices and industry standards, placing Safaricom in competition with global entities such as Google and Microsoft.

Strategically, Limuru is located just outside Nairobi, which is also home to several other data centre operators, including Digital Realty and MTN. In addition, Safaricom manages three other facilities in and around Nairobi as well as two sites in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
