Namibia Commemorates Hage Geingob with Special Banknote Launch
Namibia unveiled the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote in Windhoek to honor the late president for his significant contributions, particularly this year marking 60 years of his service. The 60-Namibian-dollar note will be legal tender and symbolizes Geingob’s commitment to Namibia. Additionally, a new series of banknotes and coins will be launched in June.
In Windhoek, Namibia, President Nangolo Mbumba officially launched the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote on Wednesday, paying tribute to the late former president’s significant contributions to the nation. Geingob, who passed away on February 4, 2024, whilst receiving cancer treatment, is remembered as a dedicated “nation builder.” This unique 60-Namibian-dollar note serves as a lasting homage to his vision and efforts toward the country’s development.
Governor of the Bank of Namibia, Johannes Gawaxab, highlighted that Geingob’s life spanned 60 years of dedicated service to the nation—including his time in exile and his role as a leader in independent Namibia. The number 60 holds deep significance, reflecting his extensive commitment to the country over these decades. Gawaxab also announced plans for a new series of banknotes and coins set to be introduced in June, which will feature advanced security measures while ensuring modernity and resilience in Namibian currency.
Previously, in 2020, the Bank of Namibia issued a commemorative banknote in celebration of the country’s 30th independence anniversary. This first-ever commemorative note featured images of Namibia’s founding President Sam Nujoma, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, and Geingob. This note was printed on polymer for enhanced durability and represented a legacy of peace, stability, and progress in Namibia’s governance.
The issuance of the Hage Geingob commemorative banknote symbolizes the profound impact the late president had on Namibia, recognizing his extensive service and contributions. The number 60 is emblematic of his lifelong commitment, and the introduction of new banknotes and coins further signifies the Bank of Namibia’s dedication to modernizing its currency. This commemorative note serves as a tribute to a leader who played a pivotal role in the nation’s historical journey.
