LERC Confirms Electricity Tariff Reduction for Nimba and Bong Counties

The Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission has upheld a 12% reduction in electricity tariffs for Jungle Energy Power in Nimba and Bong counties, setting the rate at US$0.22 per kWh. A new monthly fixed charge of US$1.50 has been introduced, alongside a reduced connection fee of US$40.00. These changes aim to improve service quality and enhance consumer access to electricity, effective from March 20, 2025.

In a pivotal ruling, the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission (LERC) has confirmed the electricity tariff for customers of Jungle Energy Power (JEP) in the Nimba and Bong counties at US$0.22 per kilowatt-hour (kWh), reflecting a 12% decrease from the previous rate of US$0.25 per kWh. This decision was announced in Gompa City by Acting Chairman Atty. Kla-Edward Toomey II, who underscored that this new rate harmonizes consumer interests with JEP’s revenue needs.

As part of the revised tariff structure, LERC introduced a fixed monthly charge of US$1.50, which is intended to bolster network infrastructure and improve service quality in both counties. Moreover, JEP is required to manage an escrow account with LERC oversight to ensure the proper allocation and accountability of the fixed charge revenues. Routine reporting on these collections will be mandated for transparency.

To facilitate new customer connections, the Commission has approved a reduced connection charge of US$40.00, significantly down from the prior charge of US$100.00. This fee will cover essential materials for new customers, including energy meters and appropriate cabling.

The newly implemented tariffs will be applicable from March 20, 2025, to March 19, 2028, revoking earlier provisional tariffs set for JEP. Minor tariff adjustments may occur as stipulated in the regulatory framework established in the Multi-Year Tariff Methodology of May 2021.

In response to LERC’s decision, JEP’s CEO, Tomah S. Floyd, Sr., indicated that management is in the process of evaluating the ruling and considering future actions. He expressed a willingness to engage with stakeholders for further discussions regarding this matter.

The Development Officer of Bong County, Seidiki Kromah, noted that the tariff reduction will enhance the welfare of local residents and commended the Commission’s decision. Similarly, Deputy Minister for Energy, Charles Umehai, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing reliable and affordable electricity, urging LERC to assist JEP to expand access for increased revenue.
