India and US Advance Talks on Major Trade Agreement and Rana’s Extradition
The MEA confirmed ongoing discussions for a Bilateral Trade Agreement between India and the US, aimed at enhancing trade relations. Extradition of Tahawwur Rana is expected soon, with strong cooperation from the US. Prime Minister Modi will also visit Mauritius for national celebrations in March 2025.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, announced that India and the United States are progressing in discussions regarding a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA). This agreement aims to enhance trade in goods and services, improve market access, reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers, and reinforce supply chain integration between the two nations.
Jaiswal further noted that during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US in February 2025, both countries expressed plans to negotiate this mutually beneficial trade agreement. The Minister of Commerce and Industries recently met with US counterparts to advance these discussions.
Concerning the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, principal suspect in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Jaiswal confirmed that his extradition to India is imminent. India is collaborating closely with the US government to complete the necessary formalities for this extradition. He referenced President Trump’s supportive comments regarding Rana’s extradition.
Additionally, it was announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will undertake a two-day state visit to Mauritius on March 11 and 12. He will attend the national day celebrations of Mauritius as the chief guest, with a contingent of Indian defence forces also participating. Modi’s visit is at the invitation of Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam.
