GCC Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Territorial Integrity in Western Sahara

The GCC has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity in Western Sahara. Secretary General Jassim Al Budaiwi made this statement during a joint meeting, affirming support for Resolution 2756. The council commended Morocco’s regional initiatives and praised ongoing reforms, highlighting Moroccan leadership and partnership potential in the Gulf region.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), represented by Secretary General Jassim Al Budaiwi, has reaffirmed its steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its southern provinces in Western Sahara. This declaration was made during a joint ministerial meeting with Morocco, where Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita represented the Moroccan government, emphasizing the council’s commitment to Morocco’s territorial claim.

The GCC expressed its backing for the United Nations-led political process regarding Western Sahara, commending UN Security Council Resolution 2756, which was adopted in October of last year. This resolution extends the United Nations peacekeeping operation MINURSO’s mandate until October 2025 and calls upon Algeria to engage meaningfully in the resolution process as a principal party to the dispute.

Furthermore, the resolution highlights prior roundtable discussions initiated by former UN Personal Envoy Horst Kohler and acknowledges Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as a legitimate and serious proposal for ending the Western Sahara dispute. This plan has been regarded as a credible political resolution by the GCC.

In addition to endorsing Morocco’s sovereignty, the GCC commended various Moroccan initiatives aimed at strengthening regional ties, such as the Atlantic initiative facilitating access for Sahel countries to the Atlantic Ocean.
