Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel commemorated the 12th anniversary of Hugo Chávez’s death in a message on social media platform X. He referred to Chávez as “Cuba’s best friend” and highlighted the significance of Chávez’s enduring influence, noting his famous words, “One leaves but does not leave.” Díaz-Canel expressed that Chávez’s contributions remain powerful and influential today.

Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías, born on July 28, 1954, in Sabaneta, Barinas, became the President of Venezuela in December 1998. Upon assuming office in February 1999, he initiated a Constituent Assembly to create a new constitution that sought to guarantee freedoms and rights previously denied to many Venezuelans, which was approved by popular vote on December 15, 1999. Chávez succumbed to prostate cancer on March 5, 2013, at the age of 58.
