In 2024, Cameroon’s Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit, a component of the Ministry of Public Works, awarded 35 contracts amounting to CFA72.9 billion, achieving an execution rate of 87.5%. This reflects a significant decrease from the initial plan, which aimed for 40 contracts, down from 71 contracts estimated at CFA317 billion in a March 2024 report on road integration and transport programs.
The annual budget for the unit was revised to CFA201 billion, a reduction from CFA289 billion, with CFA130 billion expended, representing a 64% execution rate. Originally, CFA284 billion was designated for investment purposes and CFA5 billion allocated for operational costs. Despite the budgetary adjustments, the execution of vital projects proceeded.
The unit successfully completed 13 studies, including four extensive road studies covering a total of 661 km. Additionally, over 193 km of roads underwent rehabilitation or upgrades, with 95% of planned works completed. Savings generated from various projects enabled the funding of an extra 119 km of municipal roads, alongside the expansion of a 22 km section of Yaoundé’s northern access road and the rehabilitation of the Mora-Tchakamari road in the Far North region.
In summary, Cameroon’s road infrastructure development is proceeding despite substantial budget cuts. The Jointly Financed Road Projects Unit achieved a commendable execution rate of 87.5% in 2024 by awarding 35 contracts. Furthermore, numerous road rehabilitation projects have been completed, highlighting efficient use of resources even in challenging fiscal conditions.
