United Nations Demands Accountability Following Attacks in Central African Republic

The United Nations is advocating for accountability in the Central African Republic (CAR) in light of grave human rights violations perpetrated by armed groups. According to a report from the UN Human Rights Office and MINUSCA, such accountability is essential to prevent future atrocities. The report documented at least 24 fatalities from two separate assaults in the Mbomou and Haut-Mbomou prefectures, including victims who were summarily executed.

The WTA, responsible for these actions, has connections to another armed faction known as Azandé Ani Kpi Gbé. Thameen Al-Kheetan, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, highlighted that grave human rights violations targeted primarily Muslim communities and Sudanese refugees and asylum seekers. Instances of sexual violence, forced labor, and torture, coupled with looting, were also recorded.

Al-Kheetan stressed that these “horrible crimes” must not go unpunished and reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to collaborate with authorities in promoting human rights and combating impunity within the nation. Furthermore, Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, insisted on clarifying the relationship between the WTA group and the national army while demanding transparency regarding the group’s operations. He indicated that disarming the group might be necessary if no accountability could be achieved.

The ongoing strife in CAR, characterized by persistent instability and communal violence, has resulted in significant humanitarian crises, with one in five individuals displaced internally or across borders. The conflict has inflicted severe damage to critical infrastructure, including educational and healthcare facilities. In response, MINUSCA has ramped up its efforts to safeguard civilians and support the reestablishment of state authority in the affected areas.
