Trump’s Envoy Confirms Meeting with Ukrainian Delegation in Saudi Arabia

Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s envoy, confirmed a meeting with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia to discuss the Russo-Ukrainian war. The meeting will aim to establish a framework for peace and an initial ceasefire. The Ukrainian delegation will be led by Andrii Yermak and may include key officials, while the US side comprises notable figures including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Steve Witkoff, who serves as the Special Envoy to the Middle East under President Donald Trump, has confirmed that discussions between Ukrainian and US delegations about the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict are set to occur in Saudi Arabia next week.

Witkoff, despite his primary focus on Middle Eastern matters, has previously engaged in discussions with Russian officials. He indicated that preparations for the meeting with Ukraine are underway. The envoy deemed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s outreach to Trump as a “positive first step” toward fostering dialogue.

While the meeting is slated to be held in Riyadh, Witkoff noted that it might also take place in Jeddah, stating, “The city is moving around a little bit, but it will be Saudi Arabia.” Furthermore, he expressed that the US is actively working to outline the framework for a peace agreement and an initial ceasefire for Ukraine.

An anonymous Ukrainian official disclosed to AFP that Andrii Yermak, who is the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, will lead the delegation, which could include Defence Minister Rustem Umierov. Reports suggest that the US delegation will consist of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Witkoff himself. Axios has reported that the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, 12 March.

The confirmed meeting between Ukrainian and US delegations represents a significant diplomatic effort aimed at addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Witkoff’s comments reflect a positive trajectory following Zelenskyy’s recent communication with Trump. The upcoming discussions could yield important progress towards a peace framework and ceasefire, highlighting ongoing US involvement in international relations.
