Sudan Initiates Legal Action Against UAE at ICJ for Genocide Allegations
Sudan has filed a case against the UAE at the ICJ, alleging complicity in genocide against the Masalit ethnic group by supporting the Rapid Support Forces. The claims include serious human rights violations and an appeal for the ICJ to impose emergency measures. The UAE has denied these allegations, which come amid a humanitarian crisis in Sudan stemming from ongoing conflicts since April 2023.
On Wednesday, Sudan initiated legal proceedings against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of complicity in genocide against the Masalit ethnic group in West Darfur. The allegations indicate that the UAE has provided extensive financial, political, and military support to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, contributing to acts of genocide and other human rights violations.
Sudan’s legal documents detail claims of genocide, murder, theft of property, rape, and forcible displacement facilitated by the UAE’s endorsement of the RSF and its affiliated militias. Moreover, the filing asserts that the UAE’s complicity has persisted since at least 2023 and seeks urgent measures from the ICJ to prevent further atrocities as outlined in the Genocide Convention.
The UAE has outright rejected these accusations and has similarly dismissed claims made at the United Nations Security Council that it supplied arms to the RSF. The RSF has been engaged in conflict with Sudanese forces since April 2023, a struggle which has reportedly resulted in over 20,000 deaths and the displacement of 14 million individuals, according to United Nations data. Some US universities, however, estimate the death toll to be closer to 130,000.
As the war continues, international calls for an end to hostilities are intensifying. Humanitarian crises loom as millions face famine and life-threatening conditions due to food shortages, with the conflict now affecting 13 of Sudan’s 18 states.
Sudan’s legal action against the UAE at the ICJ highlights severe allegations of genocide and human rights violations stemming from the conflict in West Darfur, compounded by claims of UAE support for the RSF militia. As the humanitarian situation deteriorates, the urgency for international intervention grows, alongside the ongoing discussions regarding the potential end of this violent conflict.
