Prakash Karat Critiques Trump and Modi for Promoting Far-Right Ideologies

Prakash Karat criticized the Modi government and Trump for endorsing far-right ideologies at a CPI(M) conference. He accused India’s reliance on the US of aligning it with oppressors and expressed concerns regarding their strategic alliance countering China. Karat characterized this government as a “Hindutva Corporate regime” with neo-fascist features, cautioning against the evolution of neo-fascism into actual fascism.

Prakash Karat, the CPI(M) Politburo coordinator, has voiced concerns regarding the promotion of ‘far-right’ ideologies by both the Narendra Modi-led Indian government and former US President Donald Trump. At a recent state party conference, he described Trump as an imperialist fixated on global supremacy and labeled the Modi administration as a “Hindutva Corporate regime” exhibiting neo-fascist inclinations.

Karat argues that India’s alignment with the United States aligns it with oppressors, highlighting its arms exports to Israel amidst the ongoing conflict with Palestine. He criticized India’s participation in the Quad—comprising the US, Japan, and Australia—as a strategy focused solely on counteracting China, indicating that this alignment could alienate India from other developing nations.

He articulated that the Modi government’s foreign policies are emblematic of its character, branding it a “Hindutva Corporate regime” with neo-fascist traits. Furthermore, he accused the opposition Congress in Kerala of attempting to undermine the CPI(M) by disputing their use of the term “neo-fascist”. He contended that Congress is misrepresenting the Left’s endeavors to combat such tendencies and resorting to “cheap politics.”

Karat underlined that the fatalities of several CPI(M) workers, reportedly at the hands of RSS affiliates in Kerala, illustrate who genuinely opposes the BJP within the state. He elaborated that the term neo-fascism, which they employ, reflects a blend of traditional fascism with elements of neoliberalism and the unique Hindutva ideology associated with the RSS.

He warned that if the rise of neo-fascism is not resisted, it might ultimately transform into full-fledged fascism. In his critique of Trump, Karat compared the American leader’s ambitions to those of imperialists from the 19th century, referring to his desire to assert dominance over territories such as Greenland and the Panama Canal, alongside his suggestion of making Canada the 51st state of the United States.
