Positive Outlook for South Africa’s Apple and Pear Industry in 2025
The South African apple and pear season has begun, with expected exports of 1.1 million cartons of pears and 51.3 million cartons of apples for 2025. Favorable climate and improved production practices contribute to these increases, despite a slow start. Export markets are growing, reinforcing South Africa’s status as a major producer in the Southern Hemisphere, with future prospects appearing bright.
The South African apple and pear season has commenced, with pear production, primarily in the Western Cape, running from February to August, focused on export markets. The apple season starts earlier, in January, lasting until May, with peak volumes noted in June.
Hortgro forecasts a 4% increase in pear exports for the 2025 season, projecting 1.1 million cartons, while apple exports are expected to rise by 5% to reach 51.3 million cartons compared to the previous year. This expansion is credited to favorable climatic conditions and improved orchard management practices, particularly the introduction of high-yielding apple varieties.
Jacques du Preez, General Manager of Trade and Markets at Hortgro, commented on the season’s progress: “The 2025 pear and apple harvest and exports started slowly, but we’re in full swing now.” Notably, this year’s pear season began between 7 and 14 days later than anticipated, returning to a more typical timeline.
With favorable growing conditions leading to quality fruit, Du Preez stated, “Fruit color is expected to be good, and the fruit is clean and ready,” anticipating a successful packing process. The apple harvest, which also started slowly, is on track for increased export volumes.
Du Preez provided insightful statistics, noting, “We expect apples passed for export to increase to 51.34 million cartons (+6%) and pears to 21.25 million (+5%).” He also mentioned stock levels in the European Union, which were down for apples and up for pears, indicating potential export opportunities for South African producers.
To date, exports reflect a solid market presence, with over 842,000 apples shipped, primarily to Africa, and 2.68 million pears exported globally to regions including the Middle East and Europe. Du Preez expressed positivity, asserting, “South Africa has now firmly established itself as the largest Southern Hemisphere apple producer.”
Looking ahead, Du Preez is optimistic about South Africa possibly becoming the leading pear producer in the Southern Hemisphere as well. Despite facing various challenges, he remains confident in the industry’s future, stating, “The future looks bright for the SA apple & pear industry.”
In conclusion, the South African apple and pear industry is poised for significant growth in the 2025 season, with projections indicating increased export volumes. Favorable climatic conditions and advancements in cultivation techniques emerge as key drivers of this growth. Despite facing certain challenges, the industry remains optimistic about its trajectory, aiming to solidify its status as a leading producer in the Southern Hemisphere for both apples and pears.
