Pakistan Ranks Second in Global Terrorism Index 2025 Due to Rising Violence

Pakistan has been ranked second in the Global Terrorism Index 2025 due to a dramatic rise in terror attacks and civilian casualties. The report highlights a yearly increase in terrorism-related deaths and identifies the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan as the principal terrorist organization responsible for the escalation in violence. Regions such as Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are particularly impacted by these developments.

The Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2025 ranks Pakistan as the second country most affected by terrorism, reflecting a significant increase in terror attacks and civilian casualties. The report, published by the Institute of Economics and Peace (IEP), analyzes data from 163 countries, representing 99.7 percent of the global population. Key metrics such as terrorist incidents, casualties, injuries, and hostage situations contribute to this evaluation.

Terrorism-related deaths in Pakistan have risen consistently over the past five years, with an alarming increase of 45 percent in terrorist attacks recorded in 2024 alone. The number of terror attacks surged from 517 in 2023 to 1,099 in 2024, marking an unprecedented yearly total since the GTI’s inception.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has been identified as the deadliest terrorist organization in Pakistan, exhibiting a growth of 90 percent in deaths attributed to its activities. In 2024, the TTP was responsible for 482 attacks, leading to 585 deaths, up from 293 in 2023, indicating a troubling escalation in violence.

The report attributes over 52 percent of the fatalities in Pakistan to the TTP. The rise in terrorism is closely linked to the Taliban’s rise to power in Afghanistan, prompting increased aggression from groups operating near the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) are notably the most affected regions, accounting for over 96 percent of terrorist activities and deaths in 2024.
