Escalating Conflict Between Sudanese Army and Rapid Support Forces

Intensified clashes between the Sudanese army and the RSF have been reported, particularly in Khartoum and Sennar State. Shelling incidents have caused civilian casualties, including in the Abu Shouk displacement camp. Sudanese armed forces have launched successful operations to reclaim territory, although the conflict has resulted in upwards of 130,000 deaths since April 2023.

Conflicts between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have intensified, primarily in Khartoum and Sennar State. Witnesses reported heavy clashes involving substantial weaponry commencing early in the morning, characterized by loud explosions and visible smoke. In Sennar, fierce battles were also reported in areas such as Al-Dali and Al-Mazmum, recognized as RSF strongholds.

Tragically, six individuals were killed, and many more injured due to RSF shelling at the Abu Shouk displacement camp in Darfur, as reported by a local relief committee. Darfur Governor Arcua Minnawi condemned the RSF’s tactics, referring to them as significant humanitarian violations. Additionally, a child was killed, and five civilians were injured from artillery attacks in the Karari district of Omdurman, which specifically targeted residential neighborhoods and a girls’ school.

In a strategic response, Sudan’s armed forces announced the execution of a coordinated operation designed to eliminate RSF units across various states, achieving successful recaptures in White Nile, Sennar, and Blue Nile. Army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah confirmed that the army regained control of critical towns, securing the Sennar State borders while RSF presence diminishes in surrounding regions.

The ongoing conflict, which began in April 2023, has seen profound devastation, with reports indicating over 20,000 fatalities and displacing 14 million. Some university estimates suggest the death toll may be as high as 130,000, underscoring the severe humanitarian crisis unfolding in Sudan.

The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF continues to escalate, resulting in significant casualties and widespread displacement of civilians. Recent assaults, including shelling on displacement camps, exemplify the dire humanitarian situation.
