Disasters in Malawi: 40,178 Households Affected as Casualties Rise

The ongoing rainy season in Malawi has resulted in 40,178 households affected by disasters, including 39 reported deaths, primarily due to lightning. DoDMA is providing food and non-food assistance to over 80% of the affected households.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has reported a significant increase in households affected by disasters during the ongoing rainy season in Malawi. Currently, 40,178 households, or approximately 180,801 individuals, have been impacted by various calamities, including stormy rains, hailstorms, heavy winds, and flooding. This figure has risen from the 35,661 households recorded earlier this month on February 7, 2025.

In addition, the department disclosed that 809 households have been displaced due to the disasters. The death toll has tragically increased from 35 to 39, with 26 fatalities attributed to lightning strikes and 13 to collapsed walls and roofs. Notably, this includes the unfortunate deaths of two infants struck by lightning in Mzuzu City and Nkhata Bay District. Injuries have also escalated, now totaling 483, with most caused by lightning and structural damage.

In response to the situation, DoDMA has extended assistance to over 80 percent of the affected households, providing essential food and non-food items, which include maize, beans, blankets, pails, and plastic sheets for temporary roofing. The department has committed to sustain relief efforts and will keep the public updated on disaster statuses and developments as they unfold.

The significant rise in the number of disaster-affected households in Malawi highlights the urgent need for continued relief efforts. With 40,178 households impacted and an increase in fatalities, particularly from lightning and structural collapses, it is evident that immediate assistance and preventive measures are critical. DoDMA’s commitment to providing relief and updates reflects the urgency of the situation and the importance of supporting the affected communities.
