Zimbabwe Projects 300 Million Kilogram Tobacco Harvest This Year

Zimbabwe is projected to achieve a tobacco yield of 300 million kilogrammes due to favorable rainfall and increased smallholder production. HARARE – Zimbabwe anticipates achieving a remarkable tobacco yield of 300 million kilogrammes this year, attributed to favorable rainfall and enhanced production efforts among smallholder farmers. This optimistic projection was presented by Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) chairperson, Patrick Devenish, during a parliamentary session on Tuesday, coinciding with the upcoming tobacco selling season set to begin on Wednesday.

Devenish expressed confidence in the crop’s performance, stating, “The crop has performed exceptionally well since the rains began in January, and we’re anticipating a substantial harvest.” The initial estimate of 280 million kilogrammes may be surpassed, as the third estimate is currently being finalized. He noted, “While we are cautious about making guarantees, we believe a 300-million-kilogramme crop is achievable.”

The increase in tobacco production is largely credited to the success of smallholder farmers who have significantly benefited from the established tobacco contracting system. Devenish remarked on the positive impact, saying, “A significant part of the industry’s success is due to these farmers. Their yields have risen sharply, and the quality of their tobacco has improved as well, leading to the emergence of a new rural middle class.”

He highlighted the necessity of supporting smallholder farmers as crucial for the sustainability of Zimbabwe’s tobacco industry, which plays a pivotal role in Africa’s agricultural sector. In preparation for the 2025 selling season, TIMB has licensed 31 A-Class buyers and 44 contractors, with 55 markets ready for operation.

Tobacco remains a vital agricultural export for Zimbabwe, serving as a significant source of foreign currency for the nation, reflecting the importance of maintaining a robust tobacco sector to support the economy.
