Umaro Sissoco Embaló Confirms Expulsion of ECOWAS Mission in Guinea-Bissau
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló expelled the ECOWAS mission, asserting his authority amid political turmoil in Guinea-Bissau. He confirmed elections scheduled for November 30 and rejected suggestions for a national unity government. Embaló warned coalitions against undermining his presidency, emphasizing the need for stability.
On the evening of March 3, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló confirmed that he personally ordered the expulsion of a “high-level” mission from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which was in Bissau to address the ongoing political crisis. Embaló stated, “I was the one who kicked out that ECOWAS mission,” asserting that foreign entities must present a roadmap approved by the President before proceeding with any actions in the country.
Embaló emphasized that the ECOWAS mission holds no decision-making authority over him and reaffirmed that legislative and presidential elections are scheduled for November 30 of this year. He rejected the idea of forming a “national unity” government, expressing that the mission will not return to Guinea-Bissau, stating, “never again” will the ECOWAS mission return to the country.
The President referred to his predecessor, José Mário Vaz, who faced severe actions from ECOWAS in 2019 during a similar political context, suggesting he would not allow a repeat of such circumstances. In a joint statement, the Inclusive Patriotic Alliance and the Platforma da Inclusive Alliance referred to Embaló as an ex-President, prompting him to respond with a warning, indicating that calling him a former president crosses a line.
Embaló advised the two political coalitions against escalating tensions, asserting that they are familiar with him and should not engage in conflicts. He articulated that their actions may threaten political stability, thus underscoring the need for unity in navigating the political landscape of Guinea-Bissau.
President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has reaffirmed his authority over the country by expelling the ECOWAS mission and announcing upcoming elections. His statements reflect a determination to prevent previous political interventions and maintain control over Guinea-Bissau’s governance. Embaló’s emphatic rejection of any suggestion for a national unity government further emphasizes his stance against foreign influence in domestic affairs.
