Mwonzora Condemns High Court Ruling, Vows to Resist 2030 Agenda

Douglas Mwonzora, president of the MDC-T, reacted strongly to the High Court’s decision invalidating the party’s 2022 congress, alleging that Zanu PF is behind this ruling to suppress dissent against President Mnangagwa’s 2030 agenda. Douglas Mwonzora, the president of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), has expressed his outrage following the High Court’s annulment of the party’s 2022 ordinary congress. Mwonzora contends that the ruling is orchestrated by Zanu PF to undermine his opposition to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s 2030 agenda, which seeks to extend presidential terms beyond the legally permitted limit.

High Court Justice Hapias Zhou mandated Mwonzora’s resignation and ordered the party to convene a new congress within six months due to procedural irregularities in the claimed 2022 congress. Mwonzora, in response, adamantly rejected Zanu PF’s influence and vowed that he would not succumb to intimidation regarding their constitutional rights.

He emphasized that the MDC-T is a key participant in the 2013 Constitution of Zimbabwe and that the public has a rightful stake in it. He highlighted that the Constitution stipulates a maximum two-term limit for the presidency, and he insisted that President Mnangagwa should relinquish power by 2028.

Mwonzora disclosed an alliance with various progressive entities, including political parties and civil organizations, to oppose any attempts by Mnangagwa to secure indefinite power. Given the court’s ruling necessitating fresh leadership elections within the MDC-T, he expressed his readiness to confront any challengers for the party leadership in the upcoming congress.

In the 2020 extraordinary congress, Mwonzora won decisively against several rivals, amidst allegations of violence and electoral malpractice from the opposition. He previously secured confirmation as the MDC-T’s sole candidate for the 2023 general elections at the 2022 ordinary congress, which has now been declared invalid by the court.

The High Court explicitly stated that the December 2022 congress did not adhere to the MDC-T Constitution’s requirements, necessitating a new congress organized by an independent electoral commission in alignment with party regulations.
