Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita represented King Mohammed VI at the Arab League Summit in Cairo, focusing on developments in the Palestinian issue. The summit aimed to unify Arab countries’ efforts to prevent Palestinian displacement and support Gaza’s reconstruction. Notable discussions included responses to controversial proposals regarding Gaza’s future, with calls for effective measures to protect Palestinians.
Nasser Bourita, Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, represented King Mohammed VI at the extraordinary Arab League Summit held in Cairo on Tuesday. The summit, convened upon Palestine’s request, sought to address crucial developments regarding the Palestinian issue, particularly focusing on the prevention of Palestinian displacement and establishing a unified Arab position amid various regional challenges. In a statement by the Egyptian government, the summit emphasized these objectives: “The summit seeks to address the latest developments in the Palestinian issue, focusing on preventing the displacement of Palestinians and reaffirming a unified Arab stance.”
The summit’s discussions extended to important aspects such as Gaza’s reconstruction, maintaining the ongoing ceasefire, and implementing legal measures to safeguard Palestinian rights. The Moroccan delegation included Mohamed Ait Ouali, its ambassador to Egypt and the permanent representative to the Arab League, along with Abdelali El Jahid, the head of the Arab and Islamic Organizations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
On the sidelines of the summit, Minister Bourita engaged in bilateral talks with key counterparts, including Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and Libyan Foreign Affairs Minister Taher Al-Baour. They addressed the enhancement of bilateral relations between Morocco and Egypt, along with critical issues outlined in the summit’s agenda. The summit was organized through cooperation among Egypt, the host nation, and Bahrain, the current chair of the Arab League.
Presidents Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain delivered opening remarks at the summit, which began in the afternoon. Among the significant topics discussed were the responses to proposals concerning the future of Gaza. Arab leaders evaluated alternatives to the controversial Gaza plan previously proposed by Donald Trump, which suggested American control over Palestinian territories. This proposal received widespread rejection from Arab states and Palestinians but was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated that “the time has come to give Gaza residents the freedom to leave.”
The summit called for practical decisions to counter the displacement of Palestinians, ensure their protection, lift the siege, and aid in Gaza’s reconstruction. Notably, the presidents of Algeria and Tunisia were absent from the summit and were represented instead by their foreign ministers. Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune cited concerns about irregularities in the summit’s preparatory processes as reasoning for his absence.
The Moroccan government has consistently supported the Palestinian cause during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, which has tragically resulted in the loss of over 60,000 lives. Morocco has advocated for an immediate ceasefire and the commitment to a peace process as viable solutions to this crisis, while extending humanitarian aid to the Palestinian populace.
The Arab League Summit held in Cairo, with Morocco’s Nasser Bourita representing King Mohammed VI, aimed to unite Arab nations around the Palestinian cause. Discussions focused on preventing Palestinian displacement, reconstructing Gaza, and supporting legal measures for Palestinian rights. This summit marked significant diplomatic engagement, despite the absence of certain leaders, underlining the need for unified Arab action amidst current regional challenges.
