The China International Press Communication Center (CIPCC), in collaboration with the China Public Diplomacy Association (CPDA), has launched a four-month media exchange and capacity-building program targeting 55 journalists from Africa and other regions, including Liberia. Commencing on February 27, 2025, in Beijing, this initiative aims to enhance understanding of China’s socio-economic development and governance while fostering stronger media cooperation globally.
The program is tailored for journalists, particularly from developing countries, providing them an immersive experience filled with lectures, field visits, and internships to equip them with insights about China’s political and cultural dynamics. The selection process was competitive, with 120 applicants from over 100 countries vying for a place in this cohort.
CIPCC Director Yu Lei expressed enthusiasm about the program, emphasizing its role in strengthening international media ties. He stated, “For and on behalf of the CIPCC, I would like to welcome you to the People’s Republic of China. This program is about fostering mutual understanding between China and the international community.”
Director Yu encouraged participants to respect local laws and fully engage with the opportunity at hand, adding, “I trust that you are already enjoying your stay. However, I urge you to abide by China’s rules and regulations.” Participants will have unique access to major political events, including the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
Over the four months, journalists will receive specialized training on topics such as diplomacy, economic reforms, and media practices alongside visits to significant provinces and interactions with governmental institutions. They will also engage with Chinese think tanks and leading businesses for further insights into national policies.
Among the journalists is Lincoln G. Peters from Liberia, who sees this opportunity as pivotal in strengthening Liberia-China media relations. He expressed particular gratitude to the Chinese Embassy and his editorial team for their support, stating, “I would like to extend my appreciation to the People’s Republic of China… for this incredible opportunity and support.”
Peters emphasized his commitment to accurately narrating China’s development stories and fostering a positive narrative about the country. He remarked, “This program is not just about professional growth but also about building bridges between our nations.”
Established over a decade ago, the CIPCC program has become a recognized platform for promoting media collaboration and cross-cultural exchanges. As participants conclude the program on July 11, 2025, they are expected to produce comprehensive reports and documentaries detailing their experiences.
Director Yu reaffirmed the program’s goal of supporting journalists as they pursue professional development while promoting open dialogue between China and the world. He stated, “We are proud to host such a distinguished group of media professionals. This exchange will provide you with firsthand knowledge of China but also serve as a platform for long-term collaboration between our nations.”
The CIPCC’s media exchange program is a significant step towards enhancing understanding and collaboration between China and the global media community. With structured training and immersive experiences, journalists like Lincoln G. Peters are positioned to build meaningful narratives that foster mutual respect and appreciation between nations. The initiation of this program highlights China’s commitment to international dialogue and cross-cultural exchanges.
