Notably, despite US support for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) against ISIS, the terror group continues to be active, prompting Ford to propose a strategic shift in American policy.

He posited that with the apparent fall of the Assad regime, the United States could collaborate with the emerging Syrian government in Damascus, which may prove to be a more effective ally in combating ISIS remnants. Ford emphasized the importance of a clear message to the SDF regarding necessary compromises on security and administrative arrangements under their control, hinting at their gradual integration.

Furthermore, he pointed out the significance of easing sanctions on Syria to foster stability and support efforts against ISIS.
