The European Parliament delegation visited the NHRI in the UAE to understand its progress in human rights. They praised the institution’s efforts and international engagement, underscoring the importance of its role. NHRI leaders expressed commitment to furthering human rights initiatives, marking an ongoing recognition of their efforts.

On February 28, 2025, the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) in Abu Dhabi hosted a high-level delegation from the European Parliament. The visit aimed to provide insight into the UAE’s advancements in human rights. The delegation lauded the NHRI’s significant strides in promoting human rights culture, implementing strategic directives, and engaging actively with regional and international human rights bodies, particularly the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI).

Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, and Dr. Saeed Al Ghufli, Secretary-General, welcomed the delegation, reinforcing the NHRI’s pivotal role in safeguarding human rights. Kruse noted, “this visit reflects the growing importance that international institutions place on the active role of the NHRI in promoting and protecting human rights.” He emphasized the UAE’s commitment to developing policies that enhance its status in upholding global human rights standards.

The delegation included Reinhold Lopatka, Chairperson of the European Parliament and Representative of Spain, alongside representatives from Sweden and Spain: Abir Al-Sahlani, Hana Jalloul, and Antonio López. Other attendees included Lucía Berger, EU Ambassador to the UAE, and various advisors from the Middle East Affairs Department. This visit marked the second by a European Parliament delegation, following an initial visit in 2022, showcasing the NHRI’s growing international regard and dedication to transparency and dialogue in human rights advocacy.

This meeting underscores the importance of international collaboration in human rights efforts, particularly the recognition of NHRI’s role in fostering an environment supportive of human rights in the UAE. The ongoing engagement between international bodies and the NHRI signals a commitment to uphold and enhance human rights practices at a global scale. The delegation’s insights and commendations affirm progress while encouraging continuous improvement.
