Uzbekistan and Finland Collaborate on Child Protection Initiatives

The Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan (PCUz) organized an online meeting on February 28 between the children’s ombudsmen of Uzbekistan and Finland. They discussed the newly enacted Uzbek law on child protection and potential cooperation. The meeting followed a study visit to Finland and focused on valuable exchanges regarding child rights and inter-agency collaboration.

On February 28, an online meeting was facilitated by the Project Co-ordinator in Uzbekistan (PCUz) between the children’s ombudsmen of Uzbekistan and Finland. This session aimed to exchange experiences and explore potential cooperation on child protection issues. Surayyo Rakhmonova, Uzbekistan’s Commissioner for Children’s Rights, shared insights regarding the newly adopted law titled On Protection of Children from All Forms of Violence, highlighting its intent to prevent violence and promote family well-being.

Ambassador Antti Karttunen, Head of the Office of PCUz, emphasized that this meeting served as an important follow-up to a study visit undertaken by a Uzbekistan delegation to Finland in December 2024. During that visit, participants engaged with Finnish officials and NGOs to share best practices in combating sexual crimes against minors. Elina Pekkarinen, the Finnish Ombudsman for Children, elaborated on her office’s role in facilitating communication with children, safeguarding their rights, and promoting their well-being.

Discussion points included the Ombudsman’s collaboration with government agencies and NGOs dedicated to children’s rights protection, as well as effective monitoring mechanisms corresponding to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Additionally, successful instances of inter-agency cooperation were highlighted, showcasing responses to violations pertaining to child rights.

The online meeting highlighted the collaborative efforts of Uzbekistan and Finland in addressing child protection issues. Both countries shared valuable experiences to enhance their respective frameworks for safeguarding children’s rights. The discussion underscored the importance of international cooperation in combating violence and ensuring the well-being of children, as epitomized by recent developments in both nations’ initiatives.
