Rwanda Criticizes Canada Over Statement on DRC Conflict
Rwanda condemned a statement by Global Affairs Canada accusing it of supporting rebel groups in the DRC. The Rwandan government labeled the statement as defamatory and criticized Canada’s failure to hold the DRC accountable for human rights violations. In response to the accusations, Canada announced sanctions against Rwanda, which Rwanda stated would not resolve the conflict.
On March 4, the Rwandan government criticized a statement from Global Affairs Canada regarding the conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), referring to it as defamatory, disgraceful, and unacceptable. The statement, issued on March 3 and signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly, Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen, and Minister of Export Promotion Mary Ng, accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 militia and stated that sanctions would be imposed against Rwanda.
Rwanda denounced Canada’s assertion, asserting that it cannot promote the peace process in the region while simultaneously blaming Rwanda for violations and neglecting to hold the DRC government accountable. The Rwandan statement highlighted ongoing attacks against civilians in South Kivu, stating, “Canada’s silence on these grave human rights violations is wrong and shameful.”
Furthermore, Canada announced suspensions on issuing permits for export controls to Rwanda and halted new government-to-government business ventures, as well as support for private sector initiatives. The Canadian government also plans to review its participation in international events hosted in Rwanda. In response, the Rwandan government asserted that punitive measures will not resolve the conflict and reaffirmed its commitment to work with regional partners on African-led mediation efforts.
The recent discourse between Rwanda and Canada reflects escalating tensions surrounding the DRC crisis. Rwanda’s condemnation of Canada’s allegations and subsequent sanctions highlights the complexity of regional dynamics. As both nations navigate this contentious landscape, the emphasis on fostering dialogue and accountability remains paramount for peace and security in the region.
