Rwanda Condemns Canada for Sanctions Over DRC Involvement

Rwanda condemned Canada’s sanctions over its involvement in the DRC conflict, deeming them shameful. Rwanda has publicly condemned Canada following its imposition of sanctions regarding Rwanda’s involvement in the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The Rwandan government labeled Canada’s actions as shameful, particularly in light of the ongoing military situation in the eastern DRC, where the M23 rebel group is reportedly aided by Rwandan soldiers, according to United Nations experts.

In a recent statement, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly criticized Rwanda’s military presence in the DRC and its support for the M23 group, asserting that these actions constitute a violation of the DRC’s sovereignty and contravene the United Nations Charter. Consequently, Canada announced a suspension of export permits for controlled goods and technologies to Rwanda and pledged to reevaluate its participation in international events held in Kigali.

Rwanda’s foreign ministry responded sharply to Canada’s stance, emphasizing that the sanctions would not contribute to a resolution of the conflict. The ministry stated, “Canada cannot claim to support regional peace efforts while simultaneously blaming Rwanda for all violations.”

These sanctions from Canada follow a similar decision by the United Kingdom, which suspended most bilateral aid to Rwanda in February due to the M23 offensive. Additionally, the United States imposed sanctions earlier this month on Rwandan Minister for Regional Integration James Kabarebe, accusing him of facilitating support for the M23 group.
