Lebanon and Saudi Arabia Emphasize Enhanced Arab Cooperation in Recent Talks
Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have jointly stressed the need for enhanced Arab cooperation, focusing on key challenges facing the region following a meeting between President Joseph Aoun and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. They reiterated their commitment to the Taif Agreement, Lebanese sovereignty, and the vital role of the Lebanese Army while discussing ways to improve economic ties and Saudi citizens’ travel to Lebanon.
On March 4, 2023, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia emphasized the significance of strengthening Arab cooperation during a meeting between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh. The two nations reiterated their commitment to the full implementation of the Taif Agreement and international resolutions aimed at reinforcing Lebanese state sovereignty and its exclusive rights to weaponry.
The Taif Agreement, forged in Saudi Arabia in 1989, concluded Lebanon’s 15-year civil conflict and reaffirmed the authority of the Lebanese government in its southern territory. The joint statement highlighted the crucial role of the Lebanese Army and called for the expulsion of Israeli forces from all Lebanese territories.
Currently, a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon has been in effect since November 27, 2024, stipulating Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon; however, Israeli troops continue to occupy five positions along the border despite an established deadline of February 18. During the official discussions, Aoun and the Crown Prince also examined collaboration opportunities, particularly regarding the resumption of Lebanese exports to Saudi Arabia and improving travel for Saudi citizens to Lebanon.
President Aoun extended an invitation to Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to visit Lebanon, which was graciously received. The meeting reinforced both nations’ dedication to cooperative efforts and addressing shared challenges.
In summary, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia have affirmed their commitment to fostering Arab cooperation and addressing regional issues, emphasizing the importance of the Taif Agreement. The two leaders discussed significant measures to enhance bilateral relations, including economic cooperation and the urgent need for a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories. This meeting marks a critical step towards reinforcing national stability and Arab unity.
