Lebanese Parliament Speaker Berri Accuses Israel of Border Violations

Speaker Nabih Berri of Lebanon has accused Israel of establishing a new security zone encroaching into Lebanese territory. He urged a unified response from Lebanon regarding changes in border situations and rejected foreign aid tied to political conditions. Nabih Berri, the Speaker of Lebanon’s Parliament and leader of the Shiite Amal party, recently stated that Israel is creating a new security zone extending one to two kilometers into Lebanese territory. This development follows the establishment of five control points in Lebanon, which he argues are insufficient for Israel’s expansionist ambitions. Berri made these comments in an interview with the Beirut daily Ad-Diyar.

Berri, often referred to as Lebanon’s “Godfather,” has played a significant role in the country’s politics, especially during challenging times. He was born to Lebanese immigrant parents in Sierra Leone before returning to Lebanon as a child. Having served as Speaker of Parliament for years, he is the highest-ranking Shiite politician in Lebanon under the National Charter.

During the interview, Berri characterized the policies of Israel’s extreme right as concerning, suggesting they signify a larger expansionist agenda. He noted that Israel’s actions have led to the establishment of a new occupied area along Lebanon’s border, an issue he insists Lebanon will monitor closely.

Speaker Berri emphasized that any changes to the border situation need a unified response from Lebanon. He called upon the international community to act against violations of Lebanese sovereignty, expressing that these actions must not be tolerated.

Addressing matters of reconstruction and international assistance, Berri firmly asserted that Lebanon will reject any foreign aid linked to political or military impositions. He maintained that rebuilding the destruction from Israeli aggressions should be a national priority, emphasizing the need for support that respects Lebanon’s sovereignty.

Berri also commented on recent developments in Syria, criticising Israel’s efforts to influence demographic changes and present itself as a protector of various communities. He praised Druze leader Walid Jumblatt for opposing Israel’s plans and advocated for a firm rejection of Israeli occupation in Lebanese territory.
