Jamaica Olympic Association President Advocates for Action-Oriented IOC Leadership
As the IOC presidential election approaches, JOA President Christopher Samuda underlines the importance of selecting an action-oriented leader. He stresses the need for the president to support national Olympic committees and emphasizes key qualities such as integrity and competence. With seven candidates vying for this critical position, members are encouraged to prioritize character and effective leadership in their votes.
With only 16 days remaining until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidential election, Christopher Samuda, President of the Jamaica Olympic Association (JOA), emphasizes the need for action-oriented candidates. The election will take place during the 144th IOC Session from March 18 to 21 in Greece, culminating in the voting for Thomas Bach’s successor on March 20. Seven candidates, including Kirsty Coventry, aim to secure the powerful presidency in world sports.
Samuda notes that the incoming president must commit to fostering the development of the JOA as well as global sports organizations. Although the JOA does not possess a vote since only individual IOC members can participate in the election, Samuda insists that the president must support capacity-building and institutional-strengthening programs for national Olympic committees. “Commitment must not only be verbalized but, more importantly, actualised and, where relevant, monetised.”
He outlines the qualities necessary for a trustworthy IOC president, emphasizing integrity, competence, and an inclusive vision. Samuda advocates for a candidate who prioritizes the needs of athletes and communities over personal gain, stating, “She or he who is true to herself or himself…will earn trust and be deserving of wearing the Olympic crown.”
All candidates have presented their manifestos and are actively campaigning to showcase their capability. According to Samuda, members of the IOC should vote for a candidate who embodies transformative leadership and can revitalize the Olympic movement. He argues, “The test should not be…who gives the best messianic manifesto or resume but who demonstrates character in thought, word, and deed.”
The elected president will serve an eight-year term, potentially extending to twelve years, overseeing significant events including two Summer Olympics in Los Angeles and two Winter Olympics.
In summary, Christopher Samuda calls for an action-driven IOC presidential candidate ahead of the upcoming election. He highlights the need for integrity and commitment to developing Olympic sports organizations, while urging voters to look beyond political manifestos to assess true leadership qualities. The decision made by IOC members will have a lasting impact on the future of the Olympic movement.
