Lebanese President Aoun’s Diplomatic Visit to Saudi Arabia and Internal Challenges in Lebanon

In a significant diplomatic gesture, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun arrived in Saudi Arabia to underscore the robust ties between Lebanon and the Kingdom. He praised Saudi Arabia’s crucial support for Lebanon’s stability and expressed his gratitude for the assistance extended by Riyadh to enhance the functionality of Lebanese institutions. This visit marks Aoun’s inaugural foreign trip since assuming the presidency, following an invitation from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

During his visit to Dar Al-Fatwa with Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Latif Deryan, Salam pledged efforts to curb Israeli military activities in Lebanon while enhancing governmental performance and citizen welfare in the upcoming months.

Salam noted that the administration would prioritize issues affecting living conditions, such as public services, infrastructure, and the socio-economic situation, particularly concerning depositor funds. He reiterated a commitment to ensuring fairness in justice and addressing the long-standing plight of detainees, especially those who have been awaiting trial for extended periods.

In light of security concerns, the Interior Ministry has intensified measures to maintain public order and citizen safety following a recent security meeting led by Interior Minister Ahmad Al-Hajjar. Notably, there was a shooting in Burj Al-Barajneh, resulting in the death of an innocent bystander amidst gang violence, prompting calls for decisive action to address such lawlessness and restore order.

The mayor of Burj Al-Barajneh, Atef Mansour, urged the state to take immediate and firm measures against recurrent gang violence, stating it is imperative to protect the citizens from armed groups operating with impunity. He stressed the community’s demand for a visible state presence to ensure safety and security in the region.

In recent border developments, a Lebanese citizen suffered injuries from Israeli gunfire while inspecting his property in Kfar Kila. The Israeli military has fortified its position by erecting barriers to restrict access to certain areas, complicating residents’ efforts to reach their land, as tensions continue along the southern border with daily incursions and incidents involving Israeli forces.
