Gachagua: GEMA Communities to Influence Kenya’s Next Government

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has proclaimed that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will decisively influence Kenya’s next government formation. He criticized President Ruto and hinted at possible cooperation with opposition leader Raila Odinga. Gachagua believes that a united GEMA could dominate Kenya’s leadership for the next century, as he actively seeks to build a coalition for the upcoming elections.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has asserted that the Gikuyu, Embu, Meru, and Akamba (GEMA) communities will play a pivotal role in determining the composition of Kenya’s upcoming government, regardless of the involvement of opposition leader Raila Odinga. Speaking at a church service in Machakos, Gachagua voiced his strong belief in GEMA’s capacity to influence the nation’s political trajectory.

Gachagua confidently stated, “GEMA ndiyo dawa ya Kenya. GEMA itaunda the next government,” emphasizing that the unity among these communities is essential for achieving political dominance in the forthcoming elections. He reassured his supporters of their substantial numerical strength, claiming, “We have looked at the numbers and they are good, with or without him (Raila).”

In a critique of President William Ruto, Gachagua emphasized that Ruto’s political fate is intertwined with Odinga’s influence, stating, “Life support machine ya Ruto ni Raila saa hii. Akizima, amekwisha.” He predicted serious electoral challenges for Ruto in 2027, suggesting that Ruto might not place higher than third or fourth in the upcoming elections.

Gachagua reflected on the significance of GEMA unity, stating that it could enable them to govern Kenya for the next century. His comments come at a time of speculation regarding his political trajectory and potential collaboration with opposition figures, having recently indicated a willingness to partner with Odinga to challenge Ruto.

During an interview with Musyi FM, Gachagua expressed uncertainty about Odinga’s intentions, remarking, “I do not understand Raila’s intentions; it is his choice whether he wants to be with Ruto and water down his political legacy or join the side of liberating this country.” He contended that the younger Gen Z demographic, vital in the 2022 elections, would likely not stand by Ruto in 2027.

Gachagua’s coalition-building efforts include discussions with key political players, including Wiper Party’s Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party. These actions signify a potential shift in Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach, highlighting Gachagua’s ambition to form a strong opposition cohort.

Rigathi Gachagua’s declarations underscore the GEMA communities’ anticipated influence in Kenya’s next government formation. His critical stance on President Ruto and openness to collaboration with opposition figures demonstrate a shifting political landscape as the 2027 elections loom. As Gachagua seeks to consolidate support among various factions, the future of his political journey remains closely tied to these developments.
