Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki to discuss enhancing bilateral relations and regional issues. Key topics included cooperation mechanisms, security in the Horn of Africa, support for Somalia and Sudan, and Egypt’s stance on Red Sea governance. President Afwerki expressed his desire to deepen relations, reflecting historic ties with Egypt.
On Friday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty conveyed a message from President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki, emphasizing the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional issues. The discussion encompassed various sectors to enhance cooperation between Egypt and Eritrea.
Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noted that this meeting in Asmara was a continuation of President El-Sisi’s visit to Eritrea in October 2024. The focus is on activating the tripartite coordination mechanism involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, following a ministerial meeting held in Cairo earlier this year.
The meeting reviewed the state of Egypt-Eritrea relations and sought to enhance joint collaboration. Key topics included regional matters, particularly in Africa, with a strong emphasis on promoting peace and security in the Horn of Africa. Support for Somalia in combating terrorism and territorial sovereignty was a priority during discussions.
Moreover, the political situation in Sudan was addressed, underscoring the need for ongoing support to maintain the unity and integrity of the state while empowering its national institutions. The talks also extended to developments in Libya, the Sahel region, and the Red Sea, emphasizing Egypt’s position against external interference by non-littoral states in Red Sea security and governance.
President Afwerki expressed warm regards to President El-Sisi, reaffirming his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across all sectors, which he believes would fulfill the aspirations of both nations, reflecting the deep historical ties between Egypt and Eritrea.
The meeting between Egyptian FM Badr Abdelatty and Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki represents a significant step towards strengthening the diplomatic ties between the two nations. Through discussions on various regional challenges and cooperative mechanisms, both countries are committed to addressing mutual concerns and fostering stability in their regions.
