EU Commissioner Critiques Trump-Zelensky Encounter and Fosters EU-India Relations

In a recent interview with NDTV, European Union Commissioner Andrius Kubilius addressed the conflict between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, condemning Trump’s treatment of Zelensky during a critical time for Ukraine. He remarked, “That was a totally difficult to understand and unacceptable way of receiving a president of another country that is fighting for its survival”.

Kubilius emphasized that the EU stands united in support of Ukraine and highlighted the need for strength to deter Russian aggression. He stated that the total military and financial support from the EU exceeded that of the United States, countering assumptions of equal backing. He asserted, “Our support was $130 billion, and the US’ was $100 billion, not 500 or whatever we hear from President Trump sometimes”.

The Commissioner warned that failing to support Ukraine could embolden aggressive actions from countries like China. He pointed to potential threats facing both Europe and India, calling for collaboration among democracies to maintain the international rules-based order. He reiterated, “We cannot allow anybody to behave in an aggressive way, not stopped by the international democratic community”.

Regarding India, Kubilius noted the significance of the EU’s strategic partnership, asserting that the 21st century will predominantly be India’s century given its role on the global stage. He mentioned the need to expedite negotiations for a free trade agreement and future collaborations, especially in defense and space, emphasizing democratic values shared by both regions.

He expressed admiration for India’s ambitious space projects and underscored the potential for joint manufacturing efforts in the defense sector. He stated, “India has a really very well-known defense industry. You have a lot of skilled people. The production cost in India is lower than it is in Europe. So, why not look for beneficial cooperation?” This highlights a growing trend in which India can help bridge Europe’s defense gaps amid geopolitical tensions involving Russia.
