Egypt’s Foreign Minister Acts to Strengthen Bilateral Relations with Eritrea

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty visited Asmara to deliver a message from President Sisi to President Afwerki, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and addressing regional issues like Somalia’s security, Sudan’s stability, and the situation in Libya. The visit followed President Sisi’s earlier trip and aimed to enhance cooperation in the region.

On March 1, 2025, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty traveled to Asmara, Eritrea, to deliver a message from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki. The communication aimed to fortify and enhance the bilateral relations between Egypt and Eritrea, alongside addressing key regional matters of mutual interest, as stated by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the Ministry’s official spokesman, noted that the visit was a follow-up to President Sisi’s significant October 2024 visit to Eritrea. The trip also sought to facilitate the tripartite coordination mechanism involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, preparing for an upcoming ministerial meeting.

During the meeting, both leaders reviewed the exceptional bilateral relations and explored avenues for increased collaboration to benefit both nations. Additionally, they discussed regional issues, focusing particularly on enhancing peace and security in the Horn of Africa, supporting Somalia in its fight against terrorism, and maintaining the country’s territorial integrity.

The leaders also exchanged views on current developments in Sudan, Libya, and the African Sahel region, emphasizing the need to reject any interference from non-Red Sea coastal nations in local security matters. President Afwerki expressed his appreciation for President Sisi’s message, affirming his interest in further developing bilateral relations to reflect the historical ties between their peoples.

In a previous joint press conference with Somali and Eritrean counterparts, Minister Abdelatty stated that the three nations had agreed to enhance the sovereignty and unity of Somalia, committing to support its government. The discussions targeted security improvements in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, carried out within the framework of international law and respecting sovereign integrity.

Minister Badr Abdelatty’s visit to Asmara underscores Egypt’s commitment to bolstering its relationship with Eritrea and addressing pressing regional challenges collaboratively.
