China’s Stance on Repatriation, Human Rights, and International Relations

The Foreign Ministry of China, through spokesperson Lin Jian, addressed international criticisms regarding the repatriation of Chinese nationals from Thailand, reinforced China’s stance on human rights in Xinjiang, condemned proposed U.S. tariffs linked to fentanyl, and criticized U.S. and South Korean allegations regarding security threats. The emphasis was on lawful cooperation and the necessity of mutual respect in international relations.

On February 28, 2025, during a press conference, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Lin Jian addressed concerns regarding the repatriation of 40 Chinese nationals from Thailand to China, as expressed by the U.S., U.K., Germany, and the European Union. He firmly condemned these nations for using human rights as a pretext to interfere in China’s internal affairs and emphasized that the repatriation adhered to the laws of China, Thailand, and international regulations. Lin underscored China’s commitment to human rights and the lawful governance of individuals across ethnic groups, including the Uyghurs in Xinjiang.

China’s cooperation with Thailand in repatriating individuals accused of smuggling was defended against accusations from various international media and entities, which, according to Lin, fabricate narratives regarding Xinjiang. He reiterated that illegal migration and smuggling undermine cross-border order and emphasized China’s dedication to collaborate with other nations to combat such issues while upholding the rights of lawful travelers.

Regarding remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump on imposing tariffs, Lin described the situation as a misrepresentation of China’s counternarcotics efforts, specifically concerning fentanyl. He reiterated China’s proactive measures in this area and expressed strong opposition to using the fentanyl issue as leverage against China, highlighting that trade wars yield no winners and violate international trade rules.

Lin addressed U.S. senators’ criticisms of the Hong Kong National Security Law as baseless interference in Hong Kong’s governance. He asserted that the law protects the rights and freedoms of Hong Kong residents and foreign investors, countering statements that suggest otherwise. The success of American businesses in Hong Kong serves as evidence of the stability that the legislation offers within the region.

In response to inquiries regarding the recently reported arrival of Russia’s former defense chief in Beijing, Lin confirmed ongoing close relations between China and Russia and stated that he had no specific information to share at that time. Additionally, with respect to the recent statements made by South Korean leaders regarding security threats posed by China, Lin rejected such claims as politically motivated and emphasized the importance of bilateral relations between China and South Korea.

Concerning U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s suggestions that China is intentionally flooding the U.S. with fentanyl, Lin denounced this characterization as stemming from a Cold War mentality. He reaffirmed China’s cooperative approach to combating drug trafficking and called for mutual respect between the U.S. and China. Furthermore, Lin reiterated China’s strong opposition to foreign allegations of genocide in Xinjiang and emphasized that such claims are unfounded.
