Renewed Interest in Angola’s Block 16 Following TGS Data Reprocessing

TGS has completed reprocessing of the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset, aiming to revive interest in Angola’s underexplored deepwater Block 16. Norwegian seismic firm TGS has completed the reprocessing of the Block 16 GeoStreamer MC3D seismic dataset in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin, aiming to revive interest in this largely overlooked deepwater block. The project was conducted in partnership with the Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG).

The Lower Congo Basin has witnessed significant exploration activity and notable discoveries in recent years. TGS emphasizes that their rejuvenation project, which covers 3,684 square kilometers, employs advanced processing workflows that enhance imaging, facilitating thorough assessments of key hydrocarbon targets in both post-salt and pre-salt formations.

Since the drilling of the latest exploration well in 2013, Angola’s Block 16 has seen little activity, with major discoveries primarily dating back to the 1990s, including Bengo and Longa. However, TGS reports new evaluations suggesting oil recovery potential from Upper Miocene reservoirs in the southern section of the block, contributing to a growing interest in this area.

Significantly, the Tchihumba discovery, identified in 2003, holds hydrocarbon zones within various Miocene sands, with an estimated recoverable volume of 136 million barrels. Additionally, the recently drilled Lumpembe-1 well within Block 15/06 is included in the seismic survey coverage, indicating ongoing exploration interest.

David Hajovsky, Executive Vice President of Multi-Client at TGS, remarked on the company’s commitment to supporting exploration efforts in the region, highlighting the potential offered by these newly identified resources and nearby significant discoveries. Recent advancements in exploration technology have fostered renewed enthusiasm for West African projects.
