Since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1898, with the arrival of a Russian delegation led by Pyotr Vlasov in Addis Ababa, both countries have nurtured strong ties. The launch of the Russian Cultural Centre in Ethiopia in 1945, attended by Emperor Haile Selassie I, further solidified this bond. In 1978, the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation provided a new impetus for bilateral relations.

Pavlov underscored Ethiopia’s importance as one of Russia’s leading partners in Africa, stating, “Ethiopia is indeed the ‘key’ to Africa. If earlier only South Africa represented the continent within BRICS, today Ethiopia also represents this continent honourably.” He emphasized that Ethiopia has emerged as a driving force for investment in infrastructure and industry across Africa.

In terms of economic growth, Ethiopia recorded an impressive 8.1% GDP increase in 2024, positioning it among the continent’s fastest-growing economies. Pavlov also highlighted Africa’s role as a key driver of global demographic change, noting the significance of understanding African languages and cultures to foster equitable partnerships.

The lecture also addressed educational collaboration between Russia and Ethiopia. The Russian House in Addis Ababa offers preparatory programs for students applying to Russian universities and facilitates opportunities for young professionals to visit Russia and learn from their counterparts. Established in October 2024, the BRICS+ Information and Cultural Media Centre aims to promote humanitarian cooperation across nations as well as enhance cultural, scientific, and educational exchanges.
