CARICOM Urges Venezuela to Respect Guyana’s Sovereignty Amid Territorial Dispute
CARICOM addresses the Guyana-Venezuela controversy, condemning Venezuelan plans for elections in Essequibo as illegal and reiterating support for Guyana’s sovereignty. The organization denounces armed attacks on Guyana’s defense forces and encourages adherence to judicial processes regarding the territorial dispute, emphasizing peaceful resolution through the International Court of Justice.
CARICOM has expressed serious concern over the ongoing Guyana-Venezuela territorial dispute during its recent meeting of Heads of Government. They addressed statements from Venezuelan officials regarding the intention to conduct elections in the Essequibo region of Guyana, which were declared for April 27, 2025, for positions in a purported “Guayana Esequiba State.” CARICOM firmly stated that such electoral actions in Guyana’s territory are illegal under international law and urged Venezuela to refrain from any further intrusions.
During the meeting, Heads of Government condemned a recent armed attack by Venezuelan nationals on members of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on February 17, 2025, near the shared border, emphasizing the need for peace and security in the region. They welcomed Venezuela’s submission of its counter-memorial regarding the validity of the 1899 Arbitral Award determining the boundary, acknowledging Guyana’s response provided in December 2024.
The regional leaders encouraged Venezuela to adhere to the scheduled court procedures, specifically urging the submission of its Rejoinder on August 8, 2025. They reaffirmed their steadfast support for Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the importance of resolving the territorial controversy through peaceful legal avenues in accordance with international law, particularly the directives laid out by the International Court of Justice.
In summary, CARICOM’s recent declarations underscore critical positions regarding the Guyana-Venezuela territorial dispute. The organization has condemned Venezuela’s planned elections in contested territories and recent acts of aggression while reaffirming its support for Guyana’s sovereignty and the judicial process established through the International Court of Justice. These statements highlight the commitment of CARICOM member states to uphold international law and promote peaceful resolution of territorial disputes.
