Arm Holdings to Establish Base in Malaysia Next Week
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that Arm Holdings Plc is set to sign an agreement to establish a base in Malaysia next week, following a discussion with the company’s CEO and Softbank’s Masayoshi Son. Anwar emphasized the importance of developing a skilled workforce to accommodate such significant investments while celebrating the country’s political stability and clear investment policies.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the forthcoming signing of an agreement between Arm Holdings Plc, a premier semiconductor company based in the UK, and Malaysia, expected next week. In a virtual meeting held on Friday, Anwar discussed this development with Arm’s CEO, alongside participation from Masayoshi Son, the CEO of Softbank Group Corp, a prominent Japanese investment firm.
Anwar expressed optimism, stating, “Insya-Allah, we will finalise the agreement next week, and it will be signed,” during a media event following the Malaysia Madani logo placement ceremony. He emphasized Arm’s global significance in the semiconductor industry, noting their decision to establish operations in Malaysia as a positive development: “Alhamdulillah.
The Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysia’s political stability and clear investment policies are vital for attracting such significant investments. He also raised concerns about the need to develop a robust, professional workforce capable of meeting the demands of this influx in investment. Anwar asserted the importance of cultivating a capable cohort of young professionals, stating, “This is a major test — can we provide tens of thousands of young professionals?”.
Arm Holdings Plc specializes in semiconductor and software design, with its headquarters in Cambridge, England, renowned for designing CPU architectures that utilize the Arm instruction set.
In summary, the forthcoming agreement between Arm Holdings Plc and Malaysia marks a significant investment opportunity, bolstered by the country’s political stability and clear policies. While this development is promising for Malaysia’s economic landscape, it also presents challenges regarding workforce readiness to meet the demands of such investments.
