FIVB and QOC Leadership Discuss Volleyball Development Opportunities in Qatar
The FIVB and QOC leadership recently met in Lausanne to discuss opportunities for volleyball’s growth in Qatar. Notable discussions built on previous engagements, refining strategies to promote the sport in the region. Qatar’s rich history in volleyball, particularly beach volleyball, underscores its dedication to expanding the sport.
The leadership of the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) convened at the FIVB Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, to explore avenues for advancing volleyball in Qatar. His Excellency Secretary General Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain represented the QOC, while FIVB President Fabio Azevedo led the discussions. This meeting builds upon prior discussions held in December 2024, continuing to refine the strategic roadmap for volleyball within Qatar and the broader Middle East region.
Furthermore, the collaboration is in alignment with the FIVB’s Strategic Vision 2032, which emphasizes professionalism, integration, empowerment, and mass participation under the motto “Together as One.” Qatar boasts a rich legacy in volleyball, particularly in its beach volleyball sector. Notably, Qatar’s Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, showcasing the nation’s commitment to the sport.
Doha is also known for hosting significant international volleyball events, including the Beach Pro Tour Finals. In a landmark achievement, last year’s 2024 WAVA U20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship was successfully held, marking the first-ever junior female beach volleyball tournament in the Middle East, with support from Olympic Solidarity and emphasizing Qatar’s ongoing dedication to the sport.
The recent meeting between the FIVB and QOC signifies ongoing collaboration aimed at enhancing volleyball’s presence in Qatar and the Middle East. With a strategic focus on development through the FIVB’s Vision 2032, the emphasis on professional growth and widespread participation is set to foster talent in a nation recognized for its volleyball accomplishments. Qatar’s history in beach volleyball is evidence of its strong commitment to the sport’s future.
