Ethiopian Prime Minister’s Historic Visit to Mogadishu: A Step Towards Reconciliation

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited Mogadishu, welcomed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed, marking a significant step towards reconciliation following the Ankara Declaration. This agreement includes mutual respect for sovereignty and integrity, while Ethiopia has renounced a previous memorandum recognizing Somaliland’s secession. Additionally, Ethiopia will contribute troops to AUSSOM, aiding Somalia’s security efforts.

On February 27, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed made a significant visit to Mogadishu, where he was warmly received by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohammed. This visit marks a pivotal step toward reconciliation between Ethiopia and Somalia, particularly following the Ankara Declaration signed in December, facilitated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The Ankara Declaration establishes mutual commitments between Ethiopia and Somalia, including respect for sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity. Notably, Ethiopia has renounced an earlier memorandum that would have formally recognized Somaliland’s secession for a prolonged period, a move condemned by the Somali government as a threat to its territorial integrity.

The Turkish government mediated this agreement, aiming to enhance collaboration and stability in the region. As part of this declaration, Somalia has committed to providing Ethiopia with reliable access to the sea while maintaining its sovereignty. Both nations are thus working towards fostering a more cooperative relationship in the Horn of Africa.

Additionally, Ethiopia has promised to contribute 2,500 troops to the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), supporting Somalia in its efforts against jihadist groups. This contingent will be the second largest after Uganda’s, as AUSSOM seeks to bolster regional security and stability.

Turkey’s long-standing involvement in Somalia includes military bases and troop presence, and relations between Ethiopia and Turkey have improved alongside the political alignment of their leading parties. A delegation from Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party is currently participating in the 8th Congress of Turkey’s Justice and Development Party, further solidifying this cooperation.
