Brazil Hosts Inaugural BRICS Sherpas Meeting, Advocating for Multilateralism

Brazil hosted the first BRICS Sherpas meeting under its presidency, emphasizing the need for stronger multilateralism. Brazil’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mauro Vieira inaugurated the inaugural meeting of BRICS Sherpas, as Brazil assumes the rotating presidency of the collective. In his opening remarks, Vieira stressed that the resolution to the crisis of multilateralism lies in enhancing multilateralism itself, advocating for stronger and more inclusive practices across all sectors.

He emphasized that the international order is currently experiencing substantial transformations, with existing institutions finding it challenging to adapt. Emerging economies are now advocating for increased representation and participation in global decision-making processes, which he described as vital for a more just and sustainable world order.

Vieira articulated that BRICS holds a crucial position in promoting a multipolar world, highlighting that it represents the aspirations of the Global South. He reiterated the necessity of establishing a global system grounded in equity and representation, acknowledging that BRICS must amplify the voices of developing nations in shaping the future.

The BRICS Sherpas meeting, convening at Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia, will engage in discussions over two days focused on advancing a fairer multipolar world order in alignment with Brazil’s leadership priorities. This assembly marks the first gathering of negotiators since the bloc expanded last year to include additional countries such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, among others.

The discussions aim to redefine global governance paradigms to better reflect contemporary 21st-century realities. Vieira stressed the need for developing nations to take active roles in discussions rather than remaining passive observers while also addressing economic protectionism that exacerbates inequalities.

He urged BRICS to champion an equitable multilateral trade system that meets the needs of the Global South, fostering the emergence of a truly multipolar economic framework. Vieira also reinforced the importance of alternative financial mechanisms, notably the New BRICS Development Bank, which is essential for financing infrastructure projects.

Under its presidency, Brazil will emphasize cooperation with the Global South and prioritize social, economic, and environmental development. Main focus areas will include health, trade, climate change, artificial intelligence, multilateral security reforms, and the enhancement of BRICS institutions.

On the second day of the meeting, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will participate in a special session, after which a summary of the discussions will be released.
