This audit evaluates the mine’s adherence to the IRMA Standard for Responsible Mining, recognized as the most thorough benchmark for industry best practices. The mine’s overall achievement level remains pending, awaiting the final evaluation of Chapter 2.2 concerning free, prior, and informed consent.

During the evaluation, auditors from SCS Global Services identified the need for further testimonies and comprehensive interviews to properly gauge the mine’s compliance with this particular chapter. These factors will be scrutinized in the forthcoming IRMA surveillance audit, scheduled to occur within 12 to 18 months following the initial report’s release. Despite the pending status of Chapter 2.2, the audit findings suggest that the Fenix Mine meets the criteria for a minimum IRMA 50 level.

The audit process for the Fenix Mine commenced on February 15, 2022, marking a significant three-year effort culminating in the announcement of the independent third-party audit. Paul Graves, President and CEO of Arcadium Lithium, articulated the company’s objectives in engaging with the IRMA process, emphasizing the importance of transparency, community engagement, and operational excellence. He remarked, “The publication of the Fenix audit report is an important milestone in our ongoing commitment to these goals.”

Globally, 22 mining operations, including Fenix, participate in the IRMA independent assessment program. Notably, Anglo American’s Minas-Rio and Barro Alto mines in Brazil attained IRMA 75 in February 2024, while Albemarle, a US-based specialty chemicals firm, became the first lithium producer to release an IRMA report in June 2023, achieving IRMA 50 for its operation in Salar de Atacama, Chile.

Furthermore, Brazilian steel producer Gerdau has declared its intention to conduct IRMA assessments for its iron ore mines in Minas Gerais. In September 2023, Chilean mining company SQM’s Salar de Atacama lithium project also reached IRMA 75. Aimee Boulanger, Executive Director of IRMA, stated, “Through detailed IRMA audit reports, mining companies, communities, and companies that purchase mined materials can gain the information they need to decide what’s going well – and where improvements can be made – at specific mines.”

The IRMA Standard is rapidly gaining recognition and is being widely adopted worldwide. The audits not only facilitate communication between mining companies and impacted communities but also promote continuous improvement in responsible mining practices.
