Russian Ambassador Evgeny Terekhin highlighted the outcomes of a recent visit by a high-level Russian delegation to Ethiopia, focusing on enhanced cooperation in health, education, and investment. Notable achievements include agreements on healthcare collaboration, educational initiatives, and the establishment of the Sputnik Africa News Agency. The visit also reinforces Ethiopia’s ties with BRICS.
On February 27, 2025, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terekhin, underscored the significant outcomes of a recent visit to Ethiopia by a high-level parliamentary delegation, led by Valentina Matvienko, the Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia. This delegation, which included notable figures such as the Minister of Economic Development and the Minister of Health, focused on enhancing cooperation across health, education, and investment sectors.
The primary aim of this high-level visit was to fortify the cooperation between legislative bodies, improve legal frameworks, and ratify intergovernmental agreements that facilitate bilateral relations. Ambassador Terekhin noted that promoting trade and economic collaboration was another pivotal goal of the delegation’s visit.
Ambassador Terekhin emphasized the tangible results achieved during the visit. Notably, the health ministries of both countries agreed to bolster their collaboration in the medical and pharmaceutical fields. Moreover, various humanitarian aids, including essential medical equipment, were delivered to the Russian Red Cross Hospital in Addis Ababa.
In the realm of education, the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, in cooperation with Rossotrudnichestvo, has initiated several educational projects in Ethiopia. These include establishing a center for the Russian-African Network University and launching language programs for Russian studies and engineering at the Pushkin Centre in Addis Ababa.
The ambassador highlighted the keen interest expressed by Russian businesses in Ethiopia’s sectors such as agriculture, energy, pharmaceuticals, mining, and tourism. This indicates a growing commitment to collaborate and invest in Ethiopia’s developing economy.
Regarding Ethiopia’s role in the BRICS organization, Ambassador Terekhin remarked on Ethiopia’s full-scale participation coinciding with Russia’s chairmanship in the bloc. He noted, “Throughout 2024, we (Russia) made every effort to ensure the harmonious and swift integration of Ethiopia into the works of this club of states representing the interests of the global majority.”
One significant outcome of the Russian visit was the establishment of the Sputnik Africa International News Agency. According to Ambassador Terekhin, this center is essential for advancing Russian-Ethiopian cooperation in media and enhancing the flow of truthful information across Africa, underscoring the strategic importance of media partnerships.
The recent visit of the Russian high-level parliamentary delegation to Ethiopia has significantly bolstered bilateral cooperation, particularly in health, education, and investment. Tangible outcomes from the visit include new agreements in healthcare, educational initiatives, and the establishment of the Sputnik Africa International News Agency, which aims to improve media exchanges.
