Jordan and Syria Leaders Enhance Cooperation on Border Security

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Syrian President Ahmed Alsharaa have agreed to enhance border security to combat arms and drug trafficking. They discussed the importance of coordination in securing the border, particularly in light of Israeli military actions and the influence of pro-Iranian militias in southern Syria. Jordan expressed willingness to aid Syria’s reconstruction and address its power shortages.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Syrian President Ahmed Alsharaa have recently agreed to enhance collaboration on securing their shared border. This initiative aims to combat the smuggling of arms and drugs, a significant concern for Jordan, particularly during the tenure of the Assad regime. Following a meeting on Wednesday in Amman, the leaders emphasized the importance of coordination to ensure border security.

During their discussions, King Abdullah condemned the recent Israeli airstrikes on southern Damascus and southern Syria near the Jordanian border, which followed a pattern of Israeli military actions against Syrian territories. Jordan attributes the surge in drug and weapon smuggling to pro-Iranian militias operating in southern Syria, and President Alsharaa has committed to addressing this issue.

The meeting marks President Alsharaa’s third international visit since assuming the presidency after leading anti-regime forces that ousted the Assad administration. With historical tensions between Assad’s government and neighboring Arab states due to the prolonged Syrian civil war, Jordan aims to support Syria’s political transition to avoid potential instability along its borders.

King Abdullah praised the recent national dialogue conference held in Damascus, referring to it as a crucial development towards rebuilding Syria and fulfilling the aspirations of its populace. Additionally, Jordanian officials expressed readiness to assist Syria in its reconstruction efforts, offering to alleviate the country’s acute power shortages by supplying electricity and gas.
