Nile Basin Ministers Visit GERD Despite Egypt’s Objections, Says Ethiopian Water Minister
Ethiopia’s Water Minister, Dr. Habtamu Itefa, confirmed that Nile Basin ministers visited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) despite Egypt’s protests. He noted that the visit showcased Ethiopia’s successes and countered misinformation promoted by Egypt. The Egyptian Minister expressed concerns that such visits might escalate tensions in the region, threatening unity among Nile Basin countries.
Addis Abeba – Dr. Habtamu Itefa, the Minister of Water and Energy for Ethiopia, emphasized that ministers from Nile Basin countries visited the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) despite objections from Egypt. He indicated that this visit served to counteract efforts aimed at undermining Ethiopia and showcased the accomplishments of the dam. Dr. Habtamu extended invitations to the ministers, coinciding with the extraordinary ministerial meeting of the Nile Basin Initiative on February 22, 2025, held in Addis Ababa.
Despite Egypt’s Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Hani Sewilam, advising ministers not to accept the Ethiopian invitation, the Nile Basin countries proceeded to tour the GERD. Dr. Habtamu expressed that Ethiopia did not engage with Egypt’s objection, which he dismissed as part of the nation’s “false propaganda.” He noted that the visit enabled ministers to witness the actual progress at the GERD, contrasting it with prior misinformation.
Dr. Habtamu stated, “The difference between prior misinformation and the reality on the ground was striking to them. They saw what Ethiopia has accomplished.” He observed that, aside from the Tanzanian minister, who had pressing electoral commitments, all other visiting ministers participated in the tour at the ministerial level.
The Egyptian government reiterated its opposition to the visit, warning that the inclusion of the GERD in Nile Day programs might exacerbate existing disputes and threaten regional cooperation among Nile Basin countries. Minister Sewilam conveyed concerns regarding the potential division among the basin states due to Ethiopia’s actions during the ministerial meeting.
In summary, the visit of Nile Basin ministers to the GERD, facilitated by Ethiopia’s invitation, highlights the ongoing tensions surrounding the dam amid Egyptian objections. The Ethiopian minister’s remarks underscore the intention to counter misinformation and showcase developmental achievements. While Egypt warns of possible escalations, the event reflects an ongoing dialogue among Nile Basin nations regarding the future of shared water resources.
