Andrés Ojeda Appointed Secretary-General of Uruguay’s Colorado Party
Andrés Ojeda has been appointed as the new secretary-general of Uruguay’s Colorado Party, succeeding former President Julio María Sanguinetti. Ojeda, who secured third place in the recent presidential elections, aims to revitalize the party and engage constructively with the incoming administration of President-elect Yamandú Orsi. His long-term commitment and vision for the party signal a strategic move to regain political influence.
Andrés Ojeda, recently elected as the secretary-general of the Colorado Party in Uruguay, has succeeded Julio María Sanguinetti, a former two-time president. At the age of 40, Ojeda emerged prominently during the presidential elections held on October 27, where he finished third as the candidate for the Colorado Party. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) selected his Unir para Crecer (Unite to Grow) list over the alternative option presented by Pedro Bordaberry’s Vamos Uruguay. In an effort to maintain balance within the party structure, Ariel Amen from Vamos Uruguay was appointed as Pro-Secretary-General.
Ojeda expressed his commitment to engaging with the incoming government led by President-elect Yamandú Orsi of the Broad Front (Frente Amplio – FA), who will assume office on March 1, 2025. “The Colorado Party is here to talk, to listen when the government considers it pertinent,” he stated regarding his outlook on future collaboration with the administration. He further articulated a vision of revitalization for the Colorado Party, declaring, “This political party today can legitimately and truly dream, through the republican coalition, of becoming and returning to be the government of the Republic from which it should never have left.”
The newly appointed secretary-general reaffirmed his long-term dedication, emphasizing his intent to remain active in the party for the next 30 years. He noted, “I am here, I am staying here, I am not going anywhere, I am going to move forward…” Ojeda highlighted the critical nature of cultivating a robust opinion within the party, indicating that efforts have been made to ensure diverse representation across its various sectors. The position of PC Secretary-General had remained unfilled since Sanguinetti’s resignation earlier this year, although he continued to play a significant role within the ruling Multicolor coalition under President Luis Lacalle Pou.
The Colorado Party, historically one of Uruguay’s two major political parties alongside the National Party, has experienced fluctuating levels of influence in the country’s political landscape. The recent elections marked a pivotal moment for the Colorado Party, as it sought to rejuvenate its leadership and position within Uruguayan politics. The selection of Andrés Ojeda as secretary-general signifies a strategic move toward revitalizing the party’s platform and engaging with future governmental frameworks. His commitment to collaboration and representation within the party reflects a broader aspiration to regain governmental power and influence.
In conclusion, Andrés Ojeda’s appointment as secretary-general of the Colorado Party symbolizes a new chapter for the political organization as it seeks to enhance its relevancy and leadership in Uruguay. His focus on open dialogue with the incoming government and his commitment to fostering intra-party engagement underscore a determined effort to rebuild and reestablish the Colorado Party’s stature in the political arena. As Ojeda embarks on this journey, the party’s future may hinge on its ability to adapt and respond to the changing political landscape.
