Javier Colomina Concludes Inaugural Visit to Egypt as NATO’s Special Representative
NATO’s Special Representative, Javier Colomina, embarked on his first official trip to Egypt on September 17-18, 2024, where he engaged with senior officials to discuss NATO-Egypt relations and regional security issues. Colomina emphasized the importance of enhancing partnerships and outlined three key priorities focused on dialogue, effective strategies, and mutual understanding.
On September 17 and 18, 2024, NATO’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighbourhood, Javier Colomina, concluded his inaugural official visit to Egypt. During this visit, he engaged with senior officials from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assess the status of NATO-Egypt relations and discuss prevailing regional security challenges. Colomina underscored Egypt’s significance as a strategic partner in the region, emphasizing the necessity of enhancing cooperation on mutual objectives.
Colomina articulated three fundamental priorities for his agenda. He stated that it is essential to “strengthen dialogue and engagement with our Southern neighbourhood partners and other potential interlocutors in the region, which is more important than ever in the current regional context.” He also stressed the need for a unified, effective, and transparent approach to NATO’s initiatives within the Southern Neighbourhood to promote closer ties and mutual understanding.
During his engagements in Cairo, Colomina met with high-profile representatives, including HE Mr. Hossam Zaki, Assistant Secretary General of the League of Arab States, and U.S. Special Envoy for Libya, Ambassador Richard Norland. Furthermore, he convened discussions with representatives from the Cairo International Centre for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping, and Peacebuilding, and addressed an audience at the Institute of Diplomatic Studies.
NATO’s engagement with Egypt is significant due to Egypt’s strategic positioning in the Southern Neighbourhood, serving as a crucial ally in addressing various regional security concerns.
