Storm Chido Hits Malawi, Causing Fatalities and Extensive Damage
Cyclone Chido struck Malawi, leading to at least seven fatalities and affecting over 30,000 individuals. Tropical Cyclone Chido has wreaked havoc in Malawi, claiming the lives of at least seven individuals, according to disaster management officials. The cyclone, which formed northeast of Madagascar, hit near Nacala, Mozambique, on Sunday, January 14, 2024. In Malawi, the storm affected over 30,000 people, destroying roofs of schools, medical facilities, and homes across multiple districts, with Salima, Kasungu, Machinga, Blantyre, and Lilongwe each reporting fatalities. In addition to the casualties, the Malawi Department of Disaster Management Affairs confirmed 16 injuries from the storm’s impact.
Tropical Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique, causing significant destruction not only there but also in Malawi. The cyclone resulted in a preliminary assessment indicating that more than 7,700 households, equivalent to approximately 34,741 individuals, were impacted. The storm transitioned into a moderate tropical storm as it passed through Malawi, resulting in heavy rainfall and flooding across 17 affected districts, predominantly in the southern region of the country.
